With a record number of femicide cases in Brazil, Tenenge and Instituto Banco Vermelho promote awareness initiative in Pernambuco
DATE: 05/29/2026
Tenenge, in partnership with Instituto Banco Vermelho (IBV), is promoting a series of awareness initiatives to combat violence against women at the Trem 2 project site of the Abreu e Lima Refinery (RNEST), in Pernambuco. The initiative includes the installation of the red bench — a symbol of the fight against violence against women and femicide — as well as lectures, training sessions, and distribution of educational materials to workers at the construction site.
The project stems from Tenenge’s concern—currently working under contract with Petrobras on the construction of the naphtha hydrotreating unit at RNEST—regarding the high number of protective measures issued by the courts against workers in the sector accused of violence against women.
Data from the National Council of Justice (CNJ) indicate that approximately 40% of protective measures granted in Pernambuco in 2024 were issued against construction workers. With 88 femicide cases recorded in 2025 alone, the state leads the Northeast region and ranks second nationwide, behind only São Paulo.
This scenario reflects the national reality. According to data from Sinesp (National Public Security Information System), Brazil recorded 399 femicide victims in the first quarter of 2026 alone—an average of four women killed per day, or one victim every five hours. This marks the deadliest first quarter in the country’s history since records began in 2015.
“For us, this is an extremely important issue. We will address violence against women throughout the duration of our contract, educating and raising awareness among people that this is a reality that must change,” emphasized director Maria Alencar.
Painted red to symbolize the blood of victims and the urgency of breaking the silence surrounding violence, the bench serves as a permanent point for reflection, engagement, and guidance on reporting channels, such as the 180 hotline, as well as providing information on the five types of violence defined under Brazilian law. The initiative also includes lectures, training sessions, and the distribution of educational booklets to construction workers.
IBV president Andrea Rodrigues praised private sector engagement in the cause. “This movement can go far beyond construction. The involvement of a company like Tenenge has the potential to transform the reality of the entire state,” she stated.
Founded on November 25, 2023—International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women—the Instituto Banco Vermelho (IBV) is a Brazilian, non-profit, nonpartisan organization operating in more than 16 states, with over 200 installations across the country. The initiative was born from the concern of two women from Pernambuco, Andrea Rodrigues and Paula Limongi, who transformed their grief over the cruelty of femicide into a national movement for awareness and action against violence toward women.
Instituto Banco Vermelho carries out initiatives on multiple fronts, including advocacy with the National Congress and educational actions in the tourism and events sectors. The organization maintains partnerships with entities such as Sesc, Senac, and Senai to conduct activities nationwide and is sponsored by Uninassau and Copergás.
Andrea Rodrigues emphasizes that the red bench is a national call to action: “We are present in every space where it is possible to prevent, protect, and transform this harsh reality. With every bench installed, every lecture delivered, and every law supported, we reaffirm our commitment to a society where no woman is silenced.”
Projects and Partnerships – As the holder of the “Zero Femicide” brand, IBV maintains a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Ministry of Women, strengthening national actions to combat violence against women. The institution is also supported by Federal Law No. 14,942, enacted on July 31, 2024, which recognizes and expands the relevance of its initiatives.
