Highways managed by Odebrecht TransPort ranked among Brazil’s best
DATE: 10/31/2018
For the second straight year, Highway Dom Pedro I (SP-065), which is operated by Rota das Bandeiras, was named Brazil’s second-best highway. Two other concessions of Odebrecht TransPort were highlighted by the survey conducted by the National Transportation Confederation (CNT). Highway Rota do Atlântico was the top-rated highway in the country’s Northeast, while Highway Rota do Oeste was the highest-rated highway in Mato Grosso state.
A total of 107,161 kilometers of state and federal highways were evaluated based on three criteria: pavement, signage and geometry. The study is considered the leading survey on the current situation of Brazil’s highway system.
“The excellent position in the rankings reflects our commitment to the safety of our users. Despite the tough economic environment, we maintained the infrastructure quality of the highways in our concessions,” said Paulo Meira Lins, CEO of Odebrecht Rodovias.
In 2017, Rota das Bandeiras conducted a comprehensive effort to recover the pavement of Highway Dom Pedro I, which ensured that it could support current traffic conditions. Today, 32 kilometers of new side lanes are being constructed in the Campinas region in the interior of São Paulo state.
Expressway PE-009, which is under the management of Rota do Atlântico, was the top-ranked highway in Pernambuco and in the entire North and Northeast regions for the third straight year. In the state of Pernambuco, the survey analyzed 3,164 kilometers on 35 highways. The stretch of State Highway PE-024, which is under the management of Rota dos Conqueiros, was rated Good.
In Mato Grosso, where Rota do Oeste operates, 65.5% of the highways under the concession were classified as Very Good and Good, exceeding the previous figure of 41.7% and representing the state’s best result of the last five years.
The survey by CNT shows that Brazil’s 21 best highways are operated under a concession model. 81.9% of the stretches under private management were rated Very Good or Good. However, only 34.3% of the highways under the management of the public sector were rated such. Since 1995, federal, state and local highway concessions already have invested R$97 billion in road improvements and maintenance, R$6.8 billion of which in 2017 alone. The concessions are responsible for employing 47,000 people, based on data from the Brazilian Highway Concession Association.
The CNT survey for 2018 is available in full on the confederation’s website.
