Company will renovate and modernize the spillway of HPP Ilha dos Pombos, owned by Light, on the border of the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais

The Ilha dos Pombos Hydroelectric Plant, located on the border of the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, will undergo interventions to renovate and modernize its spillway. The work will be carried out by OEC – Odebrecht Engineering & Construction, which signed a turnkey contract at a global price with Light Energia S.A. on May 1st. Engineering and project development work will start immediately. The construction of the new spillway will start in July of this year and the work is expected to be completed in 21 months, consuming a total investment of R$ 104 million.

The plant is owned by Light, an energy concessionaire in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The scope of the contract includes dredging services in the reservoir, structural recovery of the old spillway, construction of the new concrete spillway structure, supply of nine segment gates, two cofferdam gates and a rolling gantry, supply of automation and control system, electromechanical assembly and commissioning. At its peak, the works are expected to generate about 300 direct jobs.

According to Luis Fernando Rahuan, Contract Manager responsible for the work, this achievement represents a new advance in the process of resuming OEC’s growth. “We are recognized by the technical community for our expertise in projects of this nature and we have gained more of this opportunity to leave the mark of our work before a relevant Client, such as Light, and the entire population that will benefit from the renovation of this enterprise, bringing it more safety and reliability in the service provided”, he says.

The Ilha dos Pombos HPP has an installed capacity of 187 MW. It is located on the Paraíba do Sul River, between the municipalities of Carmo (RJ) and Além Paraíba (MG). The construction of the new spillway will allow flooding of up to 9,011 m³/s, which is equivalent to a return period of 10,000 years, allowing the plant to resume operating in full safety conditions. The enterprise was built in the 1920s, by Brazilian Hydro Electric Co. Ltda. In the initial configuration, the first two generating units were installed, with 22 MW each, which went into operation in 1924. In 1929, the third unit, with 29 MW, went into operation. In 1937 the fourth unit was installed, with 44 MW, and finally in 1949, the fifth and last unit, with 50.6 MW, started operating, reaching its current configuration.???????

With a capacity of 855 megawatts, Light’s generating complex consists of five hydroelectric plants located in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with the Ilha dos Pombos HPP being a part of this complex. In total, 96% of the water consumed in the city of Rio de Janeiro and other nearby municipalities go through Light Energia’s plants and reservoirs.
