The IIRSA South Concessionaire, through its Sustainability and Environmental Management area, carried out a series of activities on the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5. This commemoration, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, seeks to raise awareness among the world’s population about the importance of caring for the environment and promoting it through education and government policies.

In 2024, the central theme of World Environment Day focused on land recovery and resilience, addressing critical issues such as desertification and drought. Under the theme “Our lands. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration”, IIRSA South organized several activities with the aim of promoting a significant change in the management and restoration of our terrestrial ecosystems.

During the week of June 5 to 14, various activities were held in the areas of influence of the concessionaire’s sections 2 and 3, aimed at routine and periodic maintenance staff, as well as students from schools along the road.

Talks were given in schools and municipalities about the importance of caring for the environment, highlighting the need to restore the land, stop desertification and strengthen resilience to drought. These talks managed to involve municipal officials, educational institutions and the general population.

Students from the 1st to the 5th year of secondary school at Señor de Qoyllority College in Ocongate took part in a drawing competition, expressing their vision of the environment and its importance for the future. The winning drawings were exhibited at a special ceremony, highlighting the students’ creativity and their commitment to sustainable development.

As part of this program, 850 species have been planted, carefully selected according to the appropriate climate in each area. Among the species planted are Pinus sylvestris, Schizolobium parahyba (Pachaco), cedar and chestnut. These activities not only contributed to improving the environment, but also encouraged the active participation of students and community members in protecting and rejuvenating local ecosystems.

Five primary and secondary schools in section 2 took part, as well as the municipality of Mazuco and Marcapata, the community of Mallma in Ocongate, the Integrated Toll and Weighing Units of Unión Progreso and Quincemil, the Limacpunco camp, the Chancado Industrial Plant and the Puerto Maldonado Urban Crossing.

The IIRSA South members who took part in the World Environment Day activities received commemorative polo shirts as a symbol of unity and commitment to the environmental cause.

IIRSA South would like to thank everyone who took part in the Reforestation Program for their enthusiasm and dedication, making this celebration of World Environment Day a meaningful and transformative event. We also reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment, promoting the fundamental role of communities in changing attitudes towards environmental issues.
