Central do Brasil station to receive mall and hotel
DATE: 01/31/2018
The largest station on the SuperVia rail system, which carries over 130,000 passengers daily, will receive a 35,000-square-meter shopping mall with 350 stores, as well as a three-star hotel for residents and tourists in Rio de Janeiro. The new project of SuperVia, a company of Odebrecht TransPort, was made possible by the signing of an amendment to the concession contract to enable new projects to be executed on the rail system.
“With services and leisure and entertainment options, the project is yet another convenience for our passengers and will help revitalize the area surroundings the Central station,” said José Carlos Prober, CEO of SuperVia.
The station is the busiest of Rio’s train system. A connection hub for all five lines, it provides integration with the Rio De Janeiro Light Rail System (VLT Carioca), which also is operated by Odebrecht TransPort, and with the subway. Today, passengers have access to over 90 commercial establishments, which include drugstores, lottery kiosks, banks, internet cafés and clothing stores. Effectively expanding the options available to passengers, the mall will have a movie theater, food court, cybercafé and megastores.
Similar projects are under negotiation for the Nilópolis and Nova Iguaçu stations.
