System uses artificial intelligence and contributes to operational performance and process safety
DATE: 10/16/2019
Ocyan has achieved important results since the implementation of SMART (Real Time Advanced Monitoring System). In less than a year, the system that monitors the company’s rigs from the company’s base, which foresees the intensive use of artificial intelligence, from integrated data and images generated by cameras, contributed to the improvement in operational performance (upztime) by 2.5%, from 92.8 to 95.1 as compared to the previous year, and also a reduction of approximately 80% in the rate of recordable incidents, such as accidents with lost time.
“SMART is the first integrated system for monitoring rig activities in Brazil to cover the six dimensions envisaged, allowing data that were previously pulverized into separate supervisory systems to be grouped together. Now, we have been able to integrate and make available data related to drilling, well control, power management, dynamic positioning, as well as the internal TV circuit cameras of the platforms, among others. By processing and analyzing data of all these dimensions in an integrated manner, we improve control of the entire vessel. The result has been a gain in productivity and process safety due to increased capacity and speed in decision making,” explains Rodrigo Chamusca, responsible for the Support and Decision Center (CSD) and Digital Transformation at Ocyan’s Drilling Business Unit.
Ocyan SMART also contributed to the company’s rigs maintaining good performance rates in Sondópolis (used by Petrobras): “All this adds value to the service we provide and contributes to the search for new contracts, as it demonstrates Ocyan’s advanced, innovative and bold profile. Ocyan SMART enables quick answers to everyday challenges. Innovations in artificial intelligence, such as machine learning algorithms developed by our data scientists, will benefit our clients,” says Chamusca.
The company has already invested approximately R$ 1 million per rig to operate in the five dimensions (Drilling/MPD, Well Control, Dynamic Positioning (DP), Power Management (PMS) and Monitoring (CCTV)), and intends to soon reach six. The BOP Monitoring (Subsea) should be added to the scope of Ocyan SMART later this year, demonstrating the company’s pioneering spirit in the search for technological and innovative solutions. The system also allows that the activities of the rigs, by means of operational data and cameras, be monitored from any computer and not only from the Macaé base.
Partnerships to add
To expand the use of artificial intelligence, Ocyan has recently signed a contract with Intelie, a Brazilian subsidiary of the American group RigNet, which allowed the use of the platform Intelie Live. This is a system that performs integrated monitoring of the entire company’s drilling rig fleet.
“The system combines efficient analysis of big data, machine learning and IoT solutions (Internet of Things). Together, they will enable the implementation of CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) to increase the life cycle of critical equipment and develop a real-time risk assessment and management methodology (Bow Tie) to monitor the condition of mitigation barriers and prevent major accidents,” he says. Based on this new reality, equipment maintenance can be based on forecasts, increasing Ocyan’s competitive edge.
Another front of innovation is the partnership with startups that are already developing pilot projects for the Ocyan Support and Decision Center, based on technology, focused on the offshore segment: “Today, we have two partner startups that develop BOP projects and (drill pipes). Both are evolving their respective projects with us in an excellent exchange”, celebrates Chamusca.
Change of Name
SMART (Advanced Real-Time Monitoring System) is the new name for the Ocyan Live, chosen in this contest in which 165 names competed, through the suggestion of the 42 members of Ocyan itself.
