Rio de Janeiro City Hall inaugurated this Friday (05) the new Mergulhão under Avenida Cesário de Melo, in the Campo Grande neighborhood. The work, carried out by OEC, is part of the Anel Viário intervention package, within the Campo Grande Mobility Plan, a project that is transforming the country’s most populous neighborhood and is scheduled for completion in 2026.

The new Mergulhão is 420 meters long and 13 meters wide, with four lanes (two in each direction). Around 10,000 square meters of retaining walls were built, using more than 200 ties. The underpass will reduce traffic at the intersection of Avenida Cesário de Melo and Estrada do Monteiro and will also free up Rua Professor Castilho.

Before the works, drivers on Estrada do Monteiro heading towards Avenida Brasil were forced to turn right and go around Praça Francisco Barbosa to access the Alim Pedro Viaduct. Now, drivers can simply access Mergulhão, passing under Avenida Cesário de Melo and exiting on the other side, at the entrance to the viaduct. These interventions will allow more traffic to flow through the central region of Campo Grande, cutting travel times in half and making it easier to get around the neighborhood.

For Rogério Dourado, OEC’s Contracts Director responsible for the Rio de Janeiro market, this is yet another delivery that will guarantee convenience for the city’s population. “We’re happy to deliver the second project in less than a week to the city council. It’s proof of our commitment and it encourages us to continue executing our contracts, serving our clients and the population of Rio de Janeiro,” he says.
