Ocyan pursuing quality certification in Macaé

Ocyan, through its Macaé Base – Drilling Unit, implemented last year an Integrated Management System (IMS) to standardize processes, improve the management system and maximize business competitiveness. With this change, the company expects to obtain the ISO9001 / ISO14001 / OHSAS18001 Integrated Certification. Audit for the certification started in late July, will last the whole of August and end in September.

The highly competitive environment in the oil and gas sector increases client expectations regarding the quality criteria for products and services, driving organizations and companies to improve their methods in order to maintain their position and conquer new markets. In this scenario, the most adequate solution is in the tools that help management systematize and standardize activities.

“The key challenge facing the Quality Assurance area at the Drilling Business Unit in 2017 was to implement tools and invest the necessary resources to structure the whole process. It was also important to design a specific communication plan, which covered all the team members at the Macaé Base Drilling BU and its Maritime Units (MU). They were informed of the diverse phases of project implementation and hence it was easier to engage them in structuring the actions of the Integrated Management System (IMS),” said Heitor Gioppo, managing director of Ocyan’s Drilling Unit.

The Drilling Unit, which includes the Macaé Base, the Yard (storage area) and six offshore units (rigs), aims to obtain integrated certification in accordance with ABNT NBR Standards: ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems and OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System. With the certification, the company will enjoy a key differential while signing new agreements and renewing existing agreements, participating in public bid processes and while announcing to the market its sustainability, safety, environment and quality indicators.

“The company is committed to obtaining the multisite certification for the areas at the Drilling Unit. Out first achievement was involving all the 1,263 team members at the business unit – from young apprentices and interns to leaders,” highlighted Consuelo Campello, director of the Quality area at the Drilling BU.

 Quality in Focus

In 2016, the company started to pursue improvements in its processes and in August that year, it retained a consulting firm to implement the “Quality in Focus Program,” which is still ongoing at the Drilling Business Unit. According to Consuelo, team members understood the spirit of the program and the importance of improving indicators in order to obtain the certification. “Since everything is happening at the same time, the company operates better, the indicators prove that results are being achieved and we hope that the audit process will bring us the certifications,” she concluded. She also recalls that Ocyan has been carrying out a critical monthly analysis of all the results, which has enabled it to make corrections to processes.

Certification Process

The Drilling BU, through a public bid process, selected BVQi do Brasil Sociedade Certificadora Ltda. to conduct the certification audit.  It is an accredited certifier, which guarantees its competence to provide reliable and impartial services regularly by over 30 Brazilian and international accrediting agencies to perform certification services.

“With the work we are carrying out, the good management practices result in constant improvements to communication, team work and high productivity levels, which will ensure the highly desired certification,” she concluded.
