IRSA Norte, a Nova Infra Invest consortium in Peru, wins the GRI Andean Awards 2025
DATE: 11/06/2025
IRSA Norte Concessionaire was recognized with the GRI Andean Awards 2025, in the Biodiversity category, for its innovative program “Dale Vía a la Vida,” focused on mitigating the environmental impacts caused by road operations along the Paita–Yurimaguas stretch in Peru.
The initiative works directly in the protected natural areas crossed by the concession — the Bosque de Protección Altomayo and the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area — which are home to endangered species such as the yellow-tailed woolly monkey, the Andean titi monkey, and the two-toed sloth, highly vulnerable to being run over by vehicles.
The program is structured around four main fronts:
-
Education and awareness for road users
-
Installation of specialized signage
-
Monitoring of wildlife roadkill
-
Construction of aerial animal crossings (canopy bridges)
To date, six canopy bridges have been installed, each equipped with four monitoring cameras, making IRSA Norte the first road concessionaire in Peru to apply this bioengineering technology for wildlife conservation. Records show that these structures have been effective in enabling the crossing of endangered species, promoting ecological connectivity and significantly reducing animal mortality on the roads.
In addition, signage has been installed in critical areas, informational materials have been distributed at the nine toll stations along the highway, digital campaigns have been carried out, and a nationally broadcast television report was aired — all actions that increased environmental awareness among users.
The program also uses software to record occurrences on the road and relies on support from the concession’s own personnel for continuous monitoring, at no additional cost. The initiative involved a total investment of approximately USD 112,000, fully financed by the concessionaire.
More than generating an immediate ecological impact, the program has strengthened IRSA Norte’s institutional image as an infrastructure committed to sustainability. Mammals that use the bridges act as natural seed dispersers, directly contributing to the regeneration of forest ecosystems.
The experience has proven to be cost-effective and replicable, serving as a model for other road projects in sensitive areas. With this, IRSA Norte consolidates an innovative model of environmental road management in Latin America, combining biodiversity conservation and ecological connectivity.
