Since January 2020, when the WHO (World Health Organization) declared a state of public emergency around the world because of the new Coronavirus, the lives of us all are being affected in many ways. The news we receive every day, added to the social distancing and the other measures being taken to control the virus, can increase stress in the entire population.

At the Odebrecht Group, the first commitment is to the health, safety and well-being of its members. We always seek the prevention and promotion of physical, mental and social health.  That is why we have selected a fewtips, which are on the WHO website, to help deal with the possible stress caused during the outbreak of the new Coronavirus. See below:

It is normal to feel sad, stressed, confused, afraid or angry during the crisis. Talking to friends, family, and people you trust can help. Whenever you can, take some time out of your day to talk. And don’t forget: use technology to your advantage! Video conferencing is a great option to feel closer to whom you trust.

Even at home, maintain a healthy habit, with a controlled diet, eight hours sleep per day and exercise whenever possible.

Avoid spending too much time consuming news. In this way it is possible to reduce worry and agitation. Beware of fake news: seek a reliable source of information to help understand your risk regarding the virus.

Try to reuse your skills to help you through this challenging time.

What about the children? Isolation and homeschooling can also affect their mental health. Conversations and activities can help children cope with stress during the outbreak. Here are some tips:

Children in general respond to stress in different ways, be it becoming more withdrawn, nervous, anxious, angry, agitated, etc. Respond to these attitudes in a supportive manner. Listening to their concerns and offering extra care and love will help.

Children usually feel relieved if they can express and communicate their upsetting feelings in a supportive and safe environment. Help them find positive ways to express disturbing feelings such as anger, fear and sadness.

Remember that children usually follow the emotional cues of the important adults in their lives. Therefore, the way adults respond to the crisis is crucial. It is important that adults manage their own emotions well and stay calm, listen to the concerns of children, and speak kindly to them and reassure them.

Maintain regular routines and schedules as much as possible or help creating an environment, including learning, playing and relaxing. If possible, maintain schoolwork, studies or other routine activities that do not endanger children or are against health authorities.

Provide facts about what is happening and clear and appropriate information for children on how to reduce the risk of infection and stay safe. Use words that can be understood by children. Show children how they can stay safe (for example, show effective hand washing).
