H2Olmos, the Nova Infra Invest concessionaire responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Olmos irrigation system, together with AgroLeal and the Rázuri León family, are releasing the “Olmos Siembra” project through the signing of an agreement to implement a demonstration plot for the production of mango, corn, chala (forage), avocado, and goat farming.
This signing marks the beginning of a major initiative that seeks to teach small farmers, directly in the field, the technical feasibility of alternative crops, based on prior technical and economic studies, to promote the development of the Olmos valley.
“From H2Olmos, we tasked AgroLeal with conducting a detailed study on the viabilty of a new business model with the cultivation of various crops in the same plot, whose economic benefits are sustainable over time. The result of the field study indicated the need for small farmers to have a guaranteed market where they can sell their products,” explains Alfonso Pinillos, General Manager of H2Olmos.
In the first stage of the Olmos Siembra project, the plot will implement: one hectare of avocado, another of mango, two hectares of corn, and one of chala, seeking the development of a complementary cultivation scheme that combines fast-rotation species with permanent crops and goat farming, ensuring a continuous flow of income during the waiting period for the main harvest.
In a second stage, the aim will be to add value to milk production and cheese processing, benefiting goat farmers in Olmos.
The Olmos Siembra project is a business model that integrates small farmers, agro-industrial companies, and the H2Olmos concessionaire to strengthen the value chain, generating sustainable development in the Olmos valley.
