  • Atvos extends offer of decarbonization credits in Renovabio program

Atvos, Brazil’s second largest ethanol producer, has made 710,000 decarbonization credits available for sale so far (CBios) inside Renovabio, a federal program that stimulates the production and commercialization of renewable fuels as a way to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

With its eight agro-industrial units in operation accredited at Renovabio, Atvos has the potential to issue around 2.5 million CBios per harvest. CBio is issued by biofuel producers and is equivalent to one ton of avoided carbon emission by using biofuel instead of fossil fuel.

98% of Atvos’ sugarcane areas were considered for certification, one of the highest rates in the program with an average of 87% eligibility. As a result, almost all of the ethanol produced by the company can be considered in the emission of CBios.

“This coverage was only possible because we have emissions and raw material monitoring. In this harvest, we are automating the information which will contribute to the more detailed management of our carbon indicators”, Amaury Pekelman says, director of sustainability and government relations at Atvos. As a way to ensure commitment to environmental performance, reducing carbon intensity is part of the goals of the company’s executives, including the CEO.

Santander is the institution responsible for the bookkeeping and custody of Atvos’ securities, with over-the-counter trading and registered with B3. The logic of the program indicates that purchases will be made by fossil fuel distributors, who must meet their individual greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. “The focus at this moment is the consolidation of Renovabio as an enabler of emission reductions in the transportation matrix, encouraging the use of renewable and clean fuel. In the future, it is possible that CBios will be accessed by other agents seeking to reduce carbon emissions.”, explains Marcelo Mancini, Atvos’ commercial and logistics director.
