Biocom makes history in Angola by taking part in ethanol exports from Africa to Europe
DATE: 04/08/2019
For the first time in its history, Angola is going to export high quality ethanol to Europe. This will be possible due to a partnership between Biocom, an asset under Odebrecht Engineering & Construction’s (OEC) administration, and the French company Ryssen Alcools, which supplies alcohol to produce famous perfumes, such as Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. It is expected that 3,500 cubic meters (m³) of hydrated ethanol is exported in April.
“We are in line with the Angolan government’s Program to Support Production, the Diversification of Exports and Replacement of Imports policies and have sought to contribute towards improving the business environment, the national production of essentials and increasing exports,” comments Biocom Director, Luiz Gordilho.
Starting in May, a further 5,000 m³ will be exported to France through another Client, forming a total revenue of approximately USD 3.5 million. “This is the first time that Angola exports ethanol. We are very satisfied that Biocom has achieved this and hope this is the first of many other exports that the country will accomplish,” highlights Biocom Deputy General Manager, Luis Bagorro Júnior.
The company currently has a planted area of 24,090 hectares of sugar cane in Angola. In the 2018 harvest, 73,000 tons of sugar cane and 17,000 m³ of ethanol were produced. Today, Biocom is the largest private company in the non-oil sector in the country, with 2,500 Members, 97% of which are Angolan nationals.
