Barge Construction Project Will Boost the Resumption of Shipbuilding Activities in Bahia
DATE: 10/24/2024
The shipbuilding activities of the Enseada Shipyard, located in the Recôncavo Baiano, will be resumed with the construction of up to 80 mining barges for the client LHG Mining.
This project, which will be carried out in partnership with Tenenge, is expected to generate around 300 new direct jobs and up to 900 indirect jobs, resulting in a significant impact for the Recôncavo Baiano region2. In total, there will be 80 barges with a capacity to transport 2,900 tons each.
The construction of LHG Mining’s barges will be carried out by 4 Brazilian shipyards located in the North and Northeast regions, including Enseada, one of the largest national shipyards, located in Bahia3. The project will promote the Brazilian Naval Industry, providing a large generation of jobs and local economic growth, bringing enormous socio-economic benefits to the regions and to Brazil.
LHG Mining was founded in 2022, with the acquisition of iron and manganese mines in Corumbá (MS) by the J&F group, the largest Brazilian conglomerate, with more than 290,000 employees worldwide4. It enters the market with the capacity to invest in the mining sector and generate jobs, always aiming to become a unique solution for the most sustainable steel production chain.
The Enseada Shipyard was conceived for the construction and integration of offshore units, such as platforms, specialized ships, and drilling units5. It is considered the largest private investment in the Brazilian naval industry, with around USD 1 billion already invested5.
The shipyard, which is part of an industrial and logistical complex, was implemented in Maragojipe-BA6. With a strategic location that favors the development of industrial projects, it has the capacity to process more than 100,000 tons of steel per year and has about 1,000 meters of quay.
Enseada also operates its Private Use Terminal (TUP), with a customs area of 750,000 m² carrying out export and import operations of solid bulk (mineral and vegetable) and general cargo, in addition to acting as an industry focused on the renewable energy market, with a focus on the construction of wind turbine parts and the attraction of green hydrogen projects.
Tenenge has a solid track record in the engineering and construction sector, contributing to the realization of large-scale projects8. With a diversified portfolio, the company has already participated in the construction of 16 chemical and petrochemical plants, 18 thermoelectric plants, 73 platforms and offshore services, in addition to 26 refining plants. Tenenge is recognized for its commitment to quality and innovation, using its own management system based on international best practices. Recently, the company completed important thermoelectric plant projects in Brazil and the Dominican Republic and is working on the construction of the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal and the Cabinda and Lobito refineries in Angola.
Enseada and Tenenge are companies of the Novonor Group, which this year celebrates 80 years of history and which, through its businesses, makes important contributions to the development of Brazil and the various countries where it operates. Throughout its history, the businesses have used their technical expertise to provide services and manufacture quality products in various sectors essential to society, such as engineering, infrastructure, construction, petrochemical, sugar-energy, real estate, oil and gas, and mobility.
