The projects Canal do Sertão Alagoano, AHE Laúca and Vias de Luanda were entered by their teams to compete in the 2021 edition of the Global Best Projects international award, promoted by the traditional North-American specialized magazine ENR – Engineering News-Record. The award is given annually and is considered the most important in the sector. Last year, the Colón Redevelopment, executed by OEC in Panama, was elected the best project in the “Restoration” category, and also the best overall project among all the award categories. In addition, Line 2 of the Panama Subway received the Merit Award in the “Rails” category.

The award recognizes projects that bring in their conceptions aspects of innovation, safety, design, engineering and construction quality, interdisciplinarity, and international interaction. The last edition of the award had 30 winning projects, from 21 countries. This year’s ceremony will take place in December from New York City in a virtual format with online streaming.

    Canal do Sertão

Canal do Sertão is the largest water infrastructure project in Alagoas and one of the largest in Brazil. When completed, it will be able to transport water from São Francisco River for 250 KM, benefiting more than a million people in 46 cities in Sertão and Agreste regions of Alagoas, characterized by adverse weather conditions. The Section 4, delivered in this May by OEC, totals 30.4 KM of channel.

    Vias de Luanda

Vias de Luanda project aims to revitalize, modernize and maintain the infrastructure of public spaces (avenues, streets, squares and common areas) within the urban fabric of the capital of Angola. The services provided by OEC include earthmoving, drainage, technical networks, asphalt recovery, sidewalk repairs and construction, horizontal and vertical signaling, ornamental public lighting, landscaping, painting of buildings, and installation of modern urban furniture.

    Laúca

With 2,070 MW of installed capacity, Laúca hydroelectric exploitation is one of the largest projects of the segment in Africa and the largest engineering project in the history of Angola. Located on Kwanza River, its construction involved the direct mobilization of more than 10,000 people, of various nationalities, who transformed the place that was once inaccessible by roads, into what is now the largest center for the production of clean and renewable energy in the country, responsible for 47% of the energy consumed in the national network.

Laúca has become a new milestone, putting an end to the energy deficit and instability in electricity production in Angola. With 156 meters high and 1.2 KM wide, the dam is located approximately two kilometers from the power plant, located in a cavern totally excavated in rock, where the six main turbines, each with 334 MW capacity, are installed.
