Unit I of the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Plant in the Dominican Republic has been synchronized and started transmitting 36.5 megawatts (MW) to the national grid on Wednesday (February 27). Testing processes are now being conducted from the injection of energy in small quantities until Unit I’s nominal capacity of 360 MW is reached. Commercial operation of Unit I is slated for May, while Unit II will start operating in late May. Once concluded, the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Plant will have generation capacity of up to 720 MW.

“We will soon increase the power generation capacity of the Dominican Republic by 30% to 35% with Punta Catalina’s generation alone. In line with our commitment to the people of the Dominican Republic, the plant will be a watershed in the electricity service we all receive,” said President Danilo Medina. Marcelo Hofke, Regional Director of Odebrecht Engineering & Construction for the Caribbean and the United States, thanked all Team Members for their commitment: “This stage is the result of the commitment undertaken by each Team Member during the construction of the thermoelectric plant. We have people who are committed to continue working with dedication and focus to conclude the project and deliver it to the Client.”

The Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Plant is one of the biggest and most important infrastructure projects implemented in the Dominican Republic and has been certified ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, which attest that the project meets the highest international standards of the Quality Management System.
