This Monday, Braskem was named as Global Compact LEAD company by the UN Global Compact, putting it among a select group of companies recognized for their commitment to the UN Global Company for sustainable development. The announcement was made in New York during the UN General Assembly.

On the occasion, Braskem was identified as one of the highest-rated participants in this important corporate sustainability initiative. The Global Compact has 9,867 member companies, of which only 34 were recognized by the United Nations, only two of which are Brazilian. Chemicals was one of the most engaged industries, with six companies among the 34 selected, which demonstrates the importance attributed to socio-environmental development by the industry.

To be recognized as Global Compact LEAD, companies must meet two requirements. The first is to be a participant in at least two Action Platforms of UN Global Compact, demonstrating the company’s commitment to defining and fostering leadership practices in line with the Ten Principles of the Global Compact and to the Sustainable Development Goals of UN 2030 Agenda. The second requirement is committing to submit an annual sustainability report detailing progress on implementing the Ten Principles (Braskem’s report is available on https://www.braskem.com.br/relatorioanual).

“Braskem’s purpose is to improve people’s lives by creating sustainable solutions in chemistry and plastics. We are always striving to strengthen our positive social and environmental impacts and to control adequately any negative impacts. Given our belief that sustainable development never will be achieved without collaboration, we also provide concrete support to collective initiatives, such as the UN Global Compact,” said Marcelo Arantes, People & Organization, Communication, Marketing and Sustainable Development Officer at Braskem, who attended the event at which the selected companies were announced.

Lise Kingo, CEO and executive director of the UN Global Compact, explains that Global Compact LEAD is a way to showcase to society the best practices in social and environmental responsibility of companies operating in a variety of industries. “Global Compact LEAD companies represent the highest level of engagement with the UN Global Compact. Without the bold action of the responsible business community, we will never achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and create the world we want. We need companies such as those recognized today as LEAD to serve as inspiration to other large and small organizations around the world,” she said.
