On March 19th, members of the OEC’s Engineering and Innovation department had the opportunity to take part in a meeting with professor and researcher Rafael Sacks, a world reference in BIM (Building Information Modeling). The meeting allowed them to exchange experiences and foster possible partnerships.

Sacks works at the Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology, a university based in the city of Haifa, which has been in operation since 1924 and focuses on engineering and exact sciences. Together with Professor Charles Eastman, a pioneer in this technology, Sacks is one of the authors of the BIM Handbook, which is used worldwide and is considered one of the most important references ever produced on the subject.

During the meeting, Sacks presented an interesting paper on Digital Twins, applied to the monitoring of construction sites, specifically tunnels, among other equally promising applications of interest to the construction company. At the end of the meeting, possible opportunities for future partnerships were discussed, as well as the next steps to consolidate this connection with this renowned research center in Israel. Professor Sacks was also invited to take part in the internal programs for the dissemination of new technologies, which are regularly promoted by the Innovation area, in particular the “Conexão OEC” podcast (held monthly) and the BIM OEC Workshop (an annual internal meeting, with the participation of contracts).

Daniel Lepikson, Innovation Manager, gave a presentation on OEC, outlining the stages of evolution in the use of BIM at the construction company over the years. According to him, even with all the progress already made, there are still opportunities and a series of actions to promote the dissemination and systematization of the technology in the company, making its use more fluid and productive.

Sacks’ relationship with the group is not new. Together with Professor Eduardo Toledo, from Poli USP, he responded to OR’s demand by producing a work aimed at monitoring construction sites.

In addition to Sacks and Daniel, the meeting was also attended by engineers Cristiano Oliveira, Sarah Silva and Francisco Peltier, as well as two Technion researchers who work closely with the professor, Tanya Bloch and Huaquan Ying.
