OEC delivers new Pingo D’Água BRT Terminal in Rio

Six months after the Nova Transoeste began operating, Rio de Janeiro Municipal Government inaugurated the Pingo D’Água Terminal in Guaratiba on Saturday (29/06). Delivered by OEC – Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção, this is the third terminal built on this corridor from the extension of old stations. The first, Magarça, was handed over to the Cariocas (persons natural of Rio de Janeiro) on March 31, and the second, Mato Alto, on May 19. The works at the Curral Falso Terminal will be delivered later this year.
The old Pingo D’Água station (877 m²) was demolished to make way for a terminal 22 times larger, with 19,825 m². It will provide more comfort and convenience for passengers who use the BRT articulated vehicles to travel between Barra da Tijuca, Guaratiba, Campo Grande and Santa Cruz.
Work on the new Pingo D’Água BRT Terminal generated around 1,600 direct and indirect jobs. For the construction, 250 tons of steel and nine million liters of concrete were used. The transformation of stations into terminals in this corridor is the result of an investment of more than R$180 million.
According to Rogério Dourado, OEC’s Contracts Officer for the Rio de Janeiro market, this delivery reflects OEC’s commitment to its clients and the communities it serves. “We are very happy to have carried out this work for the benefit of the people of Rio de Janeiro, who will have more comfort and agility to get around the city. We will continue to work hard for the next deliveries to Rio’s municipal government”.
Feeder platforms and bike racks
Completely transformed, the new Pingo D’Água BRT Terminal will operate in conjunction with two feeder terminals, integrating ordinary buses and vans from Estrada da Pedra and Avenida Dom João VI. Improvements to the road and drainage systems have been carried out around the new BRT bus stop, causing some changes in traffic, especially at the U- turns.
Due to the high traffic of cyclists in the Guaratiba region, a bike rack with capacity for 600 bikes was also built on the site. It was built with cobogós, a typically Brazilian material made up of ceramic bricks. It is hollowed out and allows more ventilation and light in, making it perfect for busy areas such as the Pingo D’Água BRT Terminal.
Curral Falso Terminal
The last terminal to be delivered later this year will be the new Curral Falso BRT Terminal, also being built by OEC. There will be 18,300 square meters, with integration between regular buses and vans from Estrada de Sepetiba and Avenida Cesário de Melo. The old station of the same name was only 300 square meters. The new terminal will have an access walkway and a bike rack with 400 parking spaces. The work continues apace, as do the improvements to the road systems and all the drainage in the surrounding area.
