  • OEC concludes Thermoelectric Plant in Punta Catalina, in the Dominican Republic

    DATE: 05/06/2020

Published by: Odebrecht Engineering & Construction

With the conclusion of the 2nd Generation Unit, the thermoelectric plant now serves about 30% of the country’s current energy demand, with a total generation capacity of 720 MW. The 1st Generation Unit of the Plant has been operating at full load (375 MW) since October 2019.

Punta Catalina is a state-of-the-art thermal power plant that uses coal as its fuel, but it has Gas Emission Quality Control equipment that allows its emissions to be comparable to emissions from Natural Gas Thermoelectric Plants. Punta Catalina will contribute in a fundamental way to the diversification of the country’s energy matrix, which today is heavily dependent on Petroleum derivatives such as Diesel and Fuel Oil, modalities that are much more contaminants in the production of electricity.

From the start of construction to the completion of the generation and final delivery test stages, it took five years of work, valued at US$ 2.45 billion and which generated up to 12 thousand direct jobs at the peak of the work, meeting the schedule despite all obstacles faced by the company in the period.

See statement from Corporación Dominicana de Empresas Eléctricas Estatales (CDEEE).

OEC operates in seven countries, with main operations in Brazil, Angola, Dominican Republic, Peru and Panama. In the Dominican Republic, after the delivery of Punta Catalina, the focus is on resuming infrastructure projects in the water, highways and tourism segments.
