On March 10, Horiens’ team of women heavily participated in the Tea Time internal event promoted to debate and deepen knowledge about gender equity inside companies.

The event was offered by Lais Trajano, a consultant and lecturer focused on diversity and the entrepreneur behind ‘The Feminist Tea’, a Brazilian brand dedicated to teas and female empowerment.

In the lecture given to Horiens’ team, Lais presented historical and current concepts related to women’s challenges in the labor market, strengthening the role of each one in the trajectory for gender equity.

“Feminism is not the idea that women are better than men. Feminism is about equal rights for men and women. As this is not the situation we live in, there is a reaction movement of awareness,” explained Lais Trajano.

She further added that women need to talk about this with each other and have a stance based on empathy. “Does your feminism also fight for women with different realities than yours?” she inquired.

    The power of information

Knowing how to identify what machismo is was one of the main points Lais highlighted in her lecture to the members. “There are two strands of machismo, the violent one, which is easier to recognize, and the subtle one, which is linked to very everyday situations,” she detailed.

Distortion of compliments, aesthetic pressure, having the highest bar with women, in addition to postures that are still quite common in the labor market, such as manterrupting (the unnecessary interruption of a woman by a man) and mansplaining (the attitude of a man who tries to explain something to a woman, assuming she doesn’t know it), are just some examples of these situations. Bárbara Rezendes, from the Communication and Marketing team at Horiens and a participant of the company’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, formed by a group of women members, highlighted that knowing more about the topic is the first step for the transformation of the scenario. “When we dedicate ourselves to learning something, it is not only our repertoire of knowledge that is expanded, but also our eye for opportunities and the ability to act and accomplish. That was the goal of this meeting,” she said. Luanda Santos, from Horiens’ Risk and Insurance team and also a member of the committee, stressed out that events like this are more than important, they are necessary and urgent. “More than just talking about female empowerment, we need to understand that we will only move forward as a society when equity is a collective reality for everyone” she says.
