Sustainability: a collective agenda
DATE: 06/06/2018
Responsibly using the resources we have today to guarantee the lives of future generations is the basis of sustainable action. The challenge is global, permeates all layers of society, and requires knowledge, innovation, discipline and effort so that the advances made are broad and effective.
Companies play an important role in this scenario, whether by offering sustainable solutions through their products and services or by taking actions that minimize the impacts from their operations.
“For the world to move forward on sustainability issues, we must focus on the global challenges and identify those that come under our areas of operation,” highlights Sergio Leão, head of sustainability at Odebrecht S.A. “The 10 principles of the Global Compact and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are the references that show us the direction to follow,” he adds.
Read the interview with Sergio Leão about the paths of sustainability at Odebrecht:
What are the priorities of Odebrecht’s sustainability strategy?
We are focused on a set of actions that enable an in-depth look at sustainability in the Group as a whole. We are talking about identifying the essential topics of sustainability in the vision of Odebrecht and its stakeholders and how we will act in relation to them, about evaluating the maturity of our sustainability performance, considering how we are structured and what results are achieved, about monitoring and supporting the management of social and environmental risk in the Businesses and, finally, about managing knowledge, synergies and innovation.
How does Odebrecht manage environmental impacts?
For environmental issues, each Group Business has its own eco-efficiency indicators as metrics of a thermometer, showing the reduction in environmental impacts, the rational use of natural resources and the application of concepts such as product life cycles or practices such as reuse and recycling of materials.
How would you summarize the contribution of each Odebrecht Group Business towards building a sustainable future?
Braskem – sustainable chemicals to improve people’s lives
