The 23rd edition of the Structural Engineering Talent Award, organized by Gerdau and the Brazilian Association of Structural Engineering and Consulting (ABECE), featured the Guaratuba Bridge as one of its standout projects. Recognized among the country’s most significant infrastructure developments, the bridge received dual recognition during the award ceremony held in São Paulo. The project was executed by the Nova Ponte Consortium, led by Odebrecht Engenharia & Construção, and was delivered in the middle of this year.

Although the main Infrastructure category award went to the Nova Orla de São Pedro Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge, the Guaratuba Bridge achieved results that underscore its technical, social, and symbolic importance to Brazilian engineering. The project won the Online Public Vote category, demonstrating its broad public recognition and its ability to engage society around a development of major impact on regional growth.

In addition, the bridge received the Jury’s Special Recognition Award, granted to structural engineer Rui Oyamada, who was responsible for its design. This distinction reinforces the excellence of the technical solutions adopted and recognizes the engineer’s contribution to the advancement of Brazilian structural engineering.

This achievement gains even greater significance given the rigor of the Structural Engineering Talent Award, widely regarded as the most traditional and respected recognition in the field of structural engineering in Brazil. Submitted projects are evaluated by specialists from Gerdau and ABECE based on criteria that include structural design, innovation, construction processes, appropriate use of materials, urban impact, aesthetics, cost efficiency, and technical performance.

The simultaneous recognition from both the public and industry experts highlights the Guaratuba Bridge’s ability to combine qualities rarely found in a single project: engineering excellence, relevance to national infrastructure, and a strong connection with the population directly benefited by the work.

For Rui Oyamada, the award represents recognition of a project that combines forward-looking vision, innovation, and deep technical expertise. His design has become a benchmark for a new generation of Brazilian infrastructure projects capable of combining functionality, construction efficiency, and lasting value for society.

In an edition that recorded the highest number of entries in the past ten years, the Guaratuba Bridge stood out among projects of exceptional technical quality, establishing itself as one of the leading symbols of Brazilian structural engineering in 2026. The dual recognition obtained through the award reinforces not only the importance of the project for the state of Paraná, but also the role of its designer among the professionals helping shape the future of Brazilian engineering.
