OEC construction company has been recently announced as one of the winners of the Global Best Projects award, the Oscar of world engineering. The Laúca hydroelectric plant, in Angola, was elected the best project in the Energy/Industrial category in 2021. Also, the Vias de Luanda project, also in Angola, received the Merit Award in the Renovation/Restoration category. The awards ceremony will take place on December 9 in New York and will be broadcast online.
The OEC president, Marco Siqueira, says that the award is a recognition of the company’s and members’ commitment to deliver the best engineering works, that they have improved people’s quality of life. “The teams that participate in these works are intensely dedicated, since the conception of the project, and they deserve all the recognition for making these achievements possible”, he says.
This is the tenth consecutive year that the Brazilian construction company has had at least one of its projects recognized by the Global Best Projects. OEC is the only company in Latin America to record the achievement this year. The award promoted by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine recognizes projects with relevant innovation, sustainability, engineering quality, and construction aspects, in addition to the level of global diversity of its teams. In this edition, the organizers claim to have received a record number of entries, with more than double the number of projects evaluated on average in recent years. Altogether, this year there were 30 winning projects, located in 21 countries.
In the 2020 edition, OEC was recognized with the main award of the year for the Colón Redevelopment, Panama.
Laúca – Clean Energy
The Laúca hydroelectric plant has a total installed capacity of 2,070 MW, and is responsible for about 50% of the power generated in Angola. The undertaking contributes strongly to the stability of the country’s electrical system, and has led to a drastic reduction of blackouts in the country and a 55% decrease in the consumption of fossil fuels for power generation. The project, responsible for supplying approximately eight million inhabitants, is part of Angola’s development program for the electricity sector, which aims at to rehabilitate existing power generation infrastructure and implement new facilities to increase the country’s power generation, transmission, and distribution capacity.
