On February 13, the Brazilian Navy will inaugurate the Madeira Island Submarine Base Command Building, built by Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção as part of the PROSUB – Submarine Development Program.

The structure, located in the southern area of the Madeira Island Submarine Base (BSIM), in Itaguaí (RJ), has four levels consisting of a ground floor, two floors and a roof with a technical area, totaling approximately 4,900 m². The building was designed with a precast concrete structure, with a concrete block masonry enclosure, covered by a ventilated façade system, providing efficiency and thermal comfort to users.

The inauguration of the work completes the group of buildings in the region known as BSIM’s Praça da Bandeira, consisting of the Base Command and Submarine Force Command buildings, where both buildings follow the same architectural design, from the “L”-shaped volumetry to the finishes.

The complex is interconnected by a portico located in the center of the plan between the mirrored buildings, symbolizing the connection between the two buildings and providing cohesion to the complex. The portico was designed as a landmark for access to the area, a monument in honor of the submariners who helped write the history of the Brazilian Navy Submarine Force, in addition to functioning as a platform to accommodate authorities and guests who participate in activities and ceremonies in the square.

The Base Command building provides workspaces that allow for the administrative and logistical activities developed by the Brazilian Navy. The building is divided into administrative areas and Command rooms, as well as accommodation with dormitories, changing rooms, bathrooms, common rooms and the Praça D’Armas. The building has a large glass skin on the facades facing the square, with views of the pier. Like the similar building of the Submarine Force Command, the Base Command building has a covered balcony that serves as a privileged seating area, which can be used for ceremonies that will take place in the central square.

    About PROSUB

Created to strengthen the country’s naval capacity and meet the guidelines of the national defense strategy, PROSUB aims to incorporate four conventional submarines, powered by diesel-electric engines, and one with nuclear propulsion, into the Brazilian naval force, all manufactured in Brazil with the transfer of French technology, except for the nuclear part, which is being developed by the Brazilian Navy. Of the conventional submarines, two of them (Riachuelo and Humaitá) have already been delivered, the third (Tonelero) is in the sea testing phase, and the fourth (Almirante Karam) is in the final phase of construction. The nuclear-powered submarine (Álvaro Alberto) has already begun construction through the qualification section.

The program includes the construction of a naval base and two shipyards to support the operation of the new vessels. OEC – Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção is participating in this process on two fronts: in the construction of the submarines, as an integral part of ICN – Itaguaí Construções Navais, in a consortium with the French company Naval Group, which owns the technology, and as the company responsible for building the entire infrastructure for the project, under the PROSUB EBN – Shipyard and Naval Base contract.

The objective of the program is to increase the protection of the Blue Amazon, a maritime area that extends from the Brazilian coast to the edge of the Continental Shelf, totaling 5.7 million km², an area equivalent to 67% of the Brazilian territory. 95% of Brazil’s oil is extracted from it and 10% of the world’s maritime traffic passes through it, in addition to approximately 95% of the country’s foreign trade.
