The Central Terminal has a more modern check-in area, making passengers’ lives easier

OEC – Odebrecht Engineering & Construction has completed the first phase of the new check-in area at the Central Terminal of Miami International Airport (MIA). The space received modern counters equipped with the latest in self-service baggage check-in technology. The renovation is part of a $38 million investment package directed at the F and G concourses of the Terminal. Over the next 10 years, the airport will invest more than $9 billion in modernization and improvements.

“Passengers checking in at our new area are now seeing some of the innovative features that will be part of MIA’s future travel experience. The modernization of this area reflects our commitment to creating a seamless and stress-free journey for travelers,” said Miami Mayor Daniella Cava during the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by OEC representatives in the United States.

In August, OEC had already delivered another important project at the airport: the interconnection of the baggage handling system. The intervention connected the baggage screening system of the South Terminal and the Central Terminal.

“Our new check-in area at the Central Terminal is just one of many updates passengers will start to see in the coming months. From renovated restrooms to modernized transportation units, our Future-Ready program is transforming the travel journey at MIA, one improvement at a time,” added Ralph Cutié, director and CEO of MIA.

For Luiz Simon, Managing Director of OEC for the United States market, the completion of this project is another example of our engineering and construction capabilities. “This project will bring great benefits to the health of airline agents working at the check-in counters. This new technology implemented by OEC will practically eliminate the physical effort of agents in placing luggage on the belts, as the process will be done mechanically, without human intervention. We are very pleased to be able to participate in this project, benefiting the users of one of the world’s main airports. We have a long history of services provided to MIA Airport and will continue to serve this important client,” he says.

    OEC USA

In 2022, in consortium with the American company CES, OEC was selected by the Miami airport authority to carry out the complete modernization of part of the check-in area facilities at the Central Terminal of Miami International Airport.

OEC has been operating in the United States since 1991. Among other projects, the company participated in the construction of the North and South Terminals of the international airport, in addition to having carried out projects in the surrounding area, such as the Metromover and MIA Mover – transportation systems that connect the airport to the rest of the city. With the Metromover project, it became the first Brazilian company to carry out a public work in the country.

Since arriving in the United States, more than 70 projects have been completed. The company has a long history in Florida, where about half of the projects in the country are located, especially in the Miami area. The company was responsible for the construction of some of the city’s architectural icons, such as the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the Miami Heat basketball team arena, the elevated Golden Glades Interchange, the Florida International University stadium, among other projects.
