On May 22nd, another graduation ceremony of the Odebrecht Education literacy project took place. The newly graduated class is part of the ETA Xerém Consortium, in the municipality of Duque de Caxias (RJ), where the event was held.

The course lasted 11 months and totaled approximately 430 hours of classes, graduating 12 students under the guidance of teacher Alexsandra Vidal. The graduation theme was inspired by the book “The Little Prince,” chosen by the students themselves.

The ceremony was attended by Roniery Fernandes, Contract Manager and partner at Enfil; André Beseggio, Operational Manager at Odebrecht; Flávio Machado, Production Manager at Enfil; Fernando Arruda, Head of Inspection at the State Water and Sewage Company of Rio de Janeiro (CEDAE); Priscila Sia, Social Coordinator at CEDAE; and Mariane Brito, Coordinator of the Odebrecht Education Program at the Rio de Janeiro projects, who also served as Master of Ceremonies.José Givaldo, a bricklayer, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “Now I know some things, not everything, but I intend to continue studying and fulfill my dream of getting my driver’s license. I can only be grateful,” he says.

Severino Cassimiro, General Services Assistant, did not believe he would be able to leave the classes reading and writing, but his perception changed throughout the course. “Today I can, and I will continue studying outside. I will bring my wife, who also cannot read and wants to learn.”

For Mariane Brito, the project is very impactful in transforming the lives of these students and their families. “The pride in having participated and the gratitude for the learning received is always revived in the emotional speeches of the graduates and the proud look of the family members present. The desire of these students to continue their studies gives me the certainty of how important this initiative is and its perpetuity in the organization,” she evaluates.

    About Odebrecht Education

The program is the result of a partnership between Odebrecht and the RHUMO Education institution, a company that has been working in pedagogical guidance for over three decades, with evaluations and monitoring of each student’s progress. The initiative’s objectives are literacy and school reinforcement for the early years of Elementary Education. At the end of the course, all students are encouraged to take evaluations and enroll in public schools, ensuring the continuity of their studies in the corresponding grade.

The initiative is one of the results of Odebrecht’s commitment to the education of its members, aiming to materialize the Sustainability Policy, embedded in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 1 – No Poverty, 4 – Quality Education, 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and 10 – Reduced Inequalities.
