Saurimo, January 27, 2026 – Today marked the groundbreaking ceremony and the signing of the project handover agreement for the Luena (Moxico) – Saurimo (Lunda Sul) section of the Benguela Railway, in Angola. The project will be carried out by Odebrecht Engineering and Construction in the African country. With an extension of 260 km and an execution period of 60 months, the new railway line is expected to create around 2,000 jobs, representing a significant milestone for the land transportation sector and an important boost to the regional economy.
The Minister of Transport, Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu, who attended the ceremony, stated that “this strategic investment will be fundamental for the development of the provinces of Moxico and Lunda Sul. The new railway line will enhance the movement of people and goods, stimulate the local economy, and strengthen national and regional logistics integration.”
Rodrigo Melo, President of Odebrecht Angola, added: “The signing of this contract reinforces the trust that the Government and society place in Odebrecht’s delivery capacity in Angola. This project represents a historic milestone in land transportation and will contribute decisively to the economic and social growth of the region.”
The project will allow for a substantial improvement in the movement of people and goods in the eastern region, support the development of the Cereal Production Promotion Plan, and increase efficiency in the transportation of agricultural activities and processed products to the main ports, reducing logistics costs. The line will ensure connectivity with the Luanda Railway, in Saurimo, and will prepare the country for a future connection to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, enhancing the transport of strategic mineral resources such as copper, cobalt, and manganese.
With 41 years of continuous presence in the country, Odebrecht has extensive international experience in railway construction, having delivered more than 2,800 km across Africa, Europe, and the Americas, standing out for its commitment to technical excellence and the sustainable development of the regions where it operates.
The start of this project symbolizes a decisive step toward the modernization of railway infrastructure and the strengthening of the transportation sector. The construction of the Luena–Saurimo railway line reaffirms the commitment to logistics integration, sustainable economic growth, and the creation of concrete opportunities for thousands of workers and the local community.
