New class graduated by OEC Education in Rio de Janeiro
DATE: 02/20/2025
Last Friday (14/02), another graduation ceremony was held for the OEC Educação literacy project. The class, made up of members of the construction of the New Marapicu Reservoir in Nova Iguaçu, became the fourth to graduate in the state.
Fifteen students benefited from this program, who, in addition to learning to read and write, also received content related to the first years of elementary school. The classes lasted 11 months, totaling more than 400 hours of workload.
According to Mariane Brito, coordinator of OEC Educação in the construction site in Rio de Janeiro, the transformation that this program is making in the lives of its members inspires and moves her greatly. “With each class that graduates, we are certain that we are beginning a process of life change and learning. Congratulations, graduates, we are immensely proud of you,” she says.
Sandro dos Santos, one of the graduates, believes that being part of the school encourages him to always learn more. “Gaining confidence was very important. I will continue my studies. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this transformation in my life and to Professor Valéria, who has always believed in our capabilities.”
For Diogo Veloso Pires, production assistant, participating in the project was a great learning experience. “It was wonderful to remember things that I had forgotten and to be able to do activities with more autonomy. I have no words to describe my gratitude to Professor Valéria and Juliana. Thank you for everything,” he concludes.
About OEC Education
The program is the result of a partnership between OEC and the institution RHUMO Educação, a company that has been working in pedagogical guidance, with assessments and monitoring of each student’s progress for over three decades.
The goals of the initiative are literacy and tutoring for the first years of elementary school. At the end of the course, all students are encouraged to take assessments and enroll in public schools, ensuring that they continue their studies in the corresponding grade.
The initiative is one of the results of OEC’s commitment to the education of its members, with a view to implementing the Sustainability Policy, included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 – Eradication of Poverty, 4 – Quality Education, 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth and 10 – Reduction of Inequalities.
In addition to Marapicu, OEC Education has already trained students on the Transbrasil BRT, Transoeste BRT and Pingo D’água and Curral Falso BRT Terminals. Since 2021, the Program has trained more than 70 students on construction sites in Rio de Janeiro. Two more classes will be trained this year, on the Campo Grande Beltway and Xerém WTP construction sites.
