The largest Odebrecht Engineering & Construction project in Angola, the Laúca Hydroelectric Power Plant inaugurated its second generator unit at the start of the month. Now, the development has 664MW of power – which also includes the first generator unit, inaugurated in August.

The hydroelectric power plant is also the largest project underway in the country, with a total installed power capacity of 2,070 MW. With the start of operation of the second turbine – of a total of six – Laúca is now supplying approximately 50% of the country’s average energy demand. With six turbines operating, the energy produced will expand the existing electrical system and supply approximately 8 million inhabitants.

The inauguration was attended by local authorities and members, like Engineer Beatriz João, age 25, who works as an operator at the Control Building. For her, working on the project is about making the dream of contributing toward the country’s development come true. “I share my knowledge with the youth with a great deal of responsibility, since it is only in this way that I can contribute toward Angola’s development,” she said.

In March, the Odebrecht teams closed the Kwanza River bypass tunnel, a process that initiated the filling of the reservoir – a large 188-km reservoir that is currently 811 meters deep. The commissioning phases began in April.
