The Triunfo-based manufacturer also helped with donations of basic necessities for people affected by the floods

One of the companies with the greatest contribution to Rio Grande do Sul’s economy, Braskem has joined forces to rebuild the state after the floods that left thousands homeless and left at least 90% of the state damaged. Responsible for 5,700 direct and indirect jobs at the Triunfo Petrochemical Complex units and more than 80% of the municipality’s revenue, Braskem has announced that it will import an innovative material from Europe, made from recycled plastic, to be used in the reconstruction of streets and roads in the state.

Because they are flexible, the material, called “road plates”, can be applied to sidewalks for pedestrians and vehicles, helping to level the surface and prevent skidding. A total of 3,528 m² of this product is being imported by the company. The material will initially be delivered to Porto Alegre’s Civil Defense. According to the company, the aim is to continue making donations focused on rebuilding the state throughout the year.

Braskem provided financial support to the team members who were affected by the floods, as well as psychological, medical and legal assistance. The factory also sent basic food baskets, hygiene and cleaning kits and other basic necessities to the communities of Triunfo, Montenegro and Nova Santa Rita, in a partnership with the Central Única das Favelas (CUFA) [Single Shanty Towns Center]. Pallets destined for temporary shelters were donated to the Montenegro Commercial and Industrial Association, the Montenegro Municipal Government, the Rio Grande Municipal Government and the Vila Mangueira community.

In support of gauchos (residents of Rio Grande do Sul) from other regions of the state, contributions were made on several fronts. The company has already donated R$5 million in raw materials for the production of thousands of essential items, such as packaging, buckets, soaps, as well as hundreds of pallets to pack donations and help with the logistics of distributing the products. The items are being delivered to the civil defense of Rio Grande do Sul.

For the State Foundation for Environmental Protection (FEPAM), environmental emergency response products were delivered, such as blankets, cords, barriers and pillows that absorb oil and oil products, as well as raincoats for the Triunfo volunteer teams.

Among the most recent actions, Braskem is also helping to donate school folders and pencil cases made from recycled material. The initiative comes from the Plástico Transforma movement, a partnership between Braskem and the Brazilian Plastics Industry Association. The material will be sent to the Triunfo Education Department.
