Braskem, Biowash and Greco and Guerreiro enter into a partnership to launch packaging made from renewable plastic and post-consumption resin
DATE: 02/05/2020
The mixture of resins used in the solution for cleaning products reduces CO2 emissions by up to 168%, one of the gases that causes the greenhouse effect
Committed to boosting the concept of circular economy also in the packaging segment, one of Braskem’s main areas of operation, the company announces another partnership to leverage the development of sustainable solutions. From now on, the packages of the 1 and 5 liter products of the Brazilian company Biowash, the pioneer in the development of natural and 100% biodegradable cleaning products, are now produced from the mixture of renewable plastic, made from sugar cane and post-consumption resin (PCR).
“The initiative reinforces the movement in favor of the circular economy, which is important for Braskem and which depends very much on working together with our clients, partners, and society in general. Therefore, we are increasingly seeking partnerships for the development of new solutions that meet market trends, considering important points, such as the prior selection of raw materials, design and return of the product to the production cycle through recycling,” explains Rafaela Baldin, responsible for the project with the client.
Reinforcing the importance of working together, the partnership also involves the Greco e Guerreiro transformer, the company responsible for producing and supplying the new sustainable packaging to Biowash. The bottles, used to package the multipurpose washing machine and dishwasher concentrates, now contain 60% Braskem plastic of renewable origin and 40% PCR resin, resulting from the recycling of plastic products.
As more than half of its composition contains I’m greenTM bio-based renewable plastic, which captures carbon dioxide, one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect, the solution captures 6.30 tons of CO2 per year, i.e. a reduction of up to 168% in atmospheric emissions compared to conventional packages. The volume of CO2 captured per year by the product is also six times greater than the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by a thousand seedlings grown over ten years, according to Braskem.
And because it also includes post-consumption resin in its composition, the packaging becomes even more sustainable, contributing to plastic items being recycled and becoming raw material for a new use in the production chain. “The use of 40% natural PCR adds greater sustainability to the packaging and at the same time brings visual impact, without the use of pigments, making a difference at the point of sale. The joint effort, the awareness, the inclusion of the work of collectors and cooperatives and the focus on circular economy add up to all the values that guide the work of Greco e Guerreiro in this 30-year trajectory in the market” emphasizes Marcelo Guerreiro Mason, head of the company’s Sustainability area.
According to Biowash, the partnership goes far beyond its constant commitment to quality and respect for the environment. “This is Biowash’s first step in delivering sustainable packaging, but we still rely on the consumer to do their part, always allocating the bottles to recycling,” says Becky Weltzein, the company’s managing partner.
Besides signing partnerships to develop and improve its I’m greenTM portfolio, which relies on renewable and post-consumption solutions, Braskem continues to invest in actions that reinforce conscious consumption and the contribution of plastic to the sustainable development of society.
“The packaging addresses important issues, such as the safety of the final product, but it is also the look of the brand and reinforces its identity to the market and the consumer, so we believe that partnerships in this segment help us to bring a more positive message to society. Above all, we believe that the engagement of the value chain helps us to continue with our objective, which is to improve people’s lives by creating sustainable solutions in chemistry and plastics, such as the new Biowash packaging,” concludes Baldin.
