Maracanã was the Brazilian Stadium with the Most Games in 2017
DATE: 12/14/2017
Maracanã is the stadium that most received soccer games in 2017 in Brazil. Until December 13, there were 43 home games as part of the final matches of the Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup, and 2016 Olympic Games, currently administrated by the Maracanã Concessionaire, with the participation of Odebrecht Engineering & Construction – Infrastructure.
On average, it is nearly one game per week, including the state championship, Libertadores, and South American games. The data reveals intensive use of the complex, reinforcing the concessionaire’s commitment to its maintenance.
In June 2016, the concessionaire officially requested that the Rio de Janeiro State Government terminate the administrative contract for the Maracanã Complex (Maracanã and Maracanãzinho), thus allowing the government to undertake a new bidding process. Odebrecht is awaiting the government’s position on the matter.
Tour and Shows
The concessionaire has undertaken other actions to ensure that the stadium is self-sustainable. In June, the Maracanã Tour was reopened, giving tourists and residents of Rio de Janeiro access to the history of one of the world”s most famous stadiums. Until present, over 55,000 visitors have gone on the tour.
The calendar of events for 2018 already includes four scheduled international shows: Phil Collins (February 23), Foo Fighters (February 25), Pearl Jam (March 24), and Roger Waters (October 24). Another eight events, including parties and conventions, are also confirmed for next year.
Zico 10 Camp
A partnership between Maracanã and former soccer player Zico will heat up the field on January 6 and 7. Zico, also known as Galinho (“Rooster”) will head a soccer clinic for boys and girls ages 7 to 14 and will give participants the experience of learning and perfecting basic soccer skills. The goal is to experience what a day in the life of a professional athlete is like.
