Braskem is once again part of the group of companies recognized by B3 with Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) a portfolio composed of companies listed on the stock exchange that adopt for the best practices and obtain the best results in corporate sustainability . The Brazilian petrochemical company has been part of the list for all the years since the creation of the ISE in 2005, being one of only seven companies to have done so, being two industrial companies (where Braskem is inserted), three from the bank sector and two from the energy sector.

The evaluation reflects Braskem’s commitment to good social liability practices, corporate governance economic-financial management and environmental preservation.

Jorge Soto, director of Braskem’s Sustainable Development, explains that the company’s presence on the select list reinforces Braskem’s main objective to improve people’s lives by creating sustainable solutions for chemistry and plastic. “This is true for our operations and also for the environment around us,” says the executive. “In the scope of our commitments, one of the main goals is to act in the communities surrounding the company’s operations , offering not only work, but also opportunities for the majority of the population through various projects. These projects benefit approximately 200,000 people a year,” he adds.

    ISE 2019/2020
The new ISE portfolio includes 36 shares of 30 companies, representing 15 sectors totaling R$ 1.64 trillion in market value, equivalent to 37.62% of the total value of companies with shares traded on the Brazilian stock exchange. The index will run from January 6, 2020 to January 1, 2021.

Pedro Freitas, Vice President of Finance, Investor Relations, Supplies and Institutional Relations at Braskem, states that the company seeks to be a global reference in the chemical sector for its performance in favor of sustainable development and to be part of the ISE since its creation in 2005, recognizes this effort. “Braskem’s evolution meanwhile is confused with that of the ISE. Just like the index, we are also a young company, formed in 2002. Therefore, we can say that our achievements have made a great contribution to engagement at the ISE. The strengthening of the Climate dimension in 2010, for example, coincides with the strengthening of our business strategy on the subject. This year we became the world’s largest producers of biopolymers,” he concludes.

Some of Braskem’s social projects in the communities:

    Edukatu
Developed in 2013 through a partnership between our company and  Institute Akatu , Edukatu takes environmental education and sustainability concepts and conscious consumption to schools all over the country. We also entered into partnerships with Local Education Departments in seven cities in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, in addition to the State Department of Culture of São Paulo, which significantly increased the scope of the project. The program has already supported more than 43,000 students and teachers.

     Ecobarreira
The Ecobarreira is a project carried out in partnership with the  Instituto Safeweb in Porto Alegre, created to prevent solid waste from reaching Lake Guaíba. Installed in the Diluvio Stream in March 2016, it receives our support since 2017 in Environmental Education projects, focusing on raising the awareness of children and adolescents for the conscious consumption and sustainable post-consumption. Since its inauguration, Ecobarreira has prevented 475 tons of materials from being dumped in the lake, an average of 180 tons per year. After studies with the material collected in the Stream, only 8.2% of the collected material is plastic, of which approximately 20% can be recycled.

    Honey Collectors
In partnership with Uniprópolis, the project teaches the craft of honey production and hydroponic cultivation to fishermen in four regions of Alagoas: Maceió, Barra de São Miguel, Marechal Deodoro and Coqueiro Seco (Brazil). The purpose is to promote the generation of additional income for the fishermen during the season of annual prohibition of fishing, in addition to social inclusion and technical training. The honey and propolis produced have unique medicinal properties and help strengthen trade in the region.

    Ser+
Program that aims to increase the recycling of post-consumption waste in Brazil in a collaborative way and improve the life and working conditions of collectors of recyclable materials. It has supported more than 8,700 collectors.
