Odebrecht Engineering & Construction (OEC), responsible for modernizing the passenger Terminal E at the Miami International Airport, has expanded the scope of its agreement at one of the world’s main airports. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department has authorized a capital injection of US$46.3 million to OEC and Parsons Corporation, its partner in the joint venture, to improve the baggage handling system by installing safer and faster conveyors.

With the new scope, the total value of the agreement increases to US$230.8 million. Odebrecht has been operating in the United States since 1991 and has already participated in the construction of the North and South terminals at the Miami International Airport, besides implementing projects in the surrounding areas, such as Metromover and MIA Mover – transport systems that connect the airport to the city.

According to Fabio Januário, CEO of OEC, this accomplishment is an important recognition of Odebrecht’s operations in the country and the new project is important for rebuilding the company’s backlog in the United States.

The expansion of the scope of the agreement adds up to other important achievements by OEC this year. In April, the company signed an agreement with Furnas to transform the Santa Cruz Thermal Power Plant, located in the Santa Cruz Industrial District in Rio de Janeiro, into a Combined Cycle Plant, using existing gas-powered turbines and natural gas as fuel. In May, it signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct engineering studies for the construction of Centro Portuário São Mateus (CPSM), a private maritime terminal located in the city of São Mateus in the north of Espírito Santo state. Odebrecht is also participating in a public bid held by the Tanzanian government for the construction of the Rufiji Hydroelectric Power Plant at the Stiegler’s Gorge dam in east Africa, a project budgeted at US$3 billion.

    International recognition

The project for the São Paulo Metro Line 5 received the Award of Merit in the Bridges and Tunnels category from ENR (Engineering News-Record), a U.S. journal considered by the market as the Oscar of Engineering. Odebrecht Engineering & Construction is the only Brazilian company among the 22 projects selected from 14 countries.

Among the aspects that drew the attention of the jury for selecting Odebrecht’s project are the diversity of the team, the well-executed delivery of the construction project in a highly complex urban environment and the level of detail of the information related to project safety.
