Folha de S. Paulo’s Painel S.A. column highlighted the recent deliveries by OEC, the first Brazilian company to carry out public projects in the United States.

After more than three decades operating in the country, we remain steadfast in our deliveries and partnerships.

    Brazilian engineering in Miami

We recently delivered two more projects in the United States. The first is the interconnection of the baggage handling system at Miami International Airport, the busiest airport in the Americas in terms of cargo transportation and the second busiest in terms of international passengers, reaching a record 52.3 million users by 2023. The intervention connected the baggage sorting system of the South Terminal and the Central Terminal.  In addition, the company has completed a series of works contracted by multinational logistics company DHL at the airport and at its head office in Miami.

Another project carried out by the Brazilian company at the airport, the refurbishment of the Central Terminal check-in counters, was recently visited by the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, and the director and CEO of Miami International Airport, Ralph Cutié. The project is part of a wide-ranging effort to improve operational efficiency and the experience of passengers using the airport, which is receiving an unprecedented investment of more than US$7 billion in improvements. Miami Airport is Miami-Dade County’s main economic engine, generating revenues of more than US$32 billion.

    Expansion

OEC, which has been providing engineering services at Miami airport since 1993, is taking part in a tender to expand the South Terminal, which should be completed in four years, with an investment of more than US$621 million. The winning bidder will be responsible for creating a three-level structure to the east of the South Terminal. The project aims to integrate the existing levels of the terminal, providing flexibility to accommodate six narrow-body aircraft or three wide-body aircraft. It will also include the integration of existing systems, including a baggage crossing and handling system, as well as a comprehensive set of information systems and the installation of glass-walled passenger boarding bridges, enhancing the user experience.

    History in the country

OEC has been operating in the United States for 33 years. Among other projects, the company also participated in the construction of the international airport’s north and south terminals, as well as carrying out projects in the surrounding area, such as Metromover and MIA Mover – transportation systems that connect the airport to the rest of the city. With the Metromover project in downtown Miami, it became the first Brazilian company to carry out public works in the country.

Since arriving in the United States, it has completed more than 75 works. The company has a long history in Florida, the state where about half of the construction work carried out in the country is located, especially in the Miami area. The company was responsible for building some of the city’s architectural icons, such as the Adrienne Arsht Arts Center, the Miami Heat basketball team’s arena, the elevated Golden Glades Interchange, the Florida International University Stadium, among other projects.
