OEC Connection welcomes Willian Barela, from Casa Firjan
DATE: 05/31/2024
For its 24th episode, the Conexão OEC podcast spoke to Willian Barela, innovation analyst at Casa Firjan, a space created by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro whose mission is to serve as an environment for innovation, education, creativity and trends.
In the new episode, Barela talks about biotechnology and how this area can help the construction industry. In addition, he discusses solutions that would help with the efficiency of heavy construction. “A very cool example (of biotechnology) is WikiHouse. This system makes it possible to project a construction like a jigsaw puzzle. You can build your house by fitting each brick together, as each one has a specific design that makes it easier to build,” Willian said.
The purpose of biotechnology is to apply science together with genetic engineering concepts to generate new products in agriculture, industrial processes or medicine.
Willian Barela has a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a master’s degree in Neuroengineering from the Edmond and Lily Safra International Neuroscience Institute (IIN-ELS) and a residency at the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD). He was one of the country’s pioneers in biohacking and neurohacking culture associated with biotechnologies and neurotechnologies in open science and citizen science activities. He is also a maker, having joined the company Olabi Makerspace in 2015. He is currently in charge of the BioLab at Casa Firjan’s Fab Lab.
The 24th episode is now available on OEC’s YouTube and Spotify channels.
