Tenenge, the industrial engineering branch of OEC, started the construction of a gas terminal for New Fortress Energy (NFE) in Babitonga Bay, in Santa Catarina. The project, called Terminal Gás Sul (Southern Gas Terminal) (TGS), comprises an Ocean Terminal and more than 32 kilometers of on and offshore pipelines that will be completed by June 2022, with an investment of BRL 383 million. The agreement covers detailed engineering, supply of equipment, goods, materials, civil construction, electromechanical assembly, commissioning, and start-up of the plant.
The new venture will supply 15 million cubic meters of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) per day, of which at first 7 million will be in Santa Catarina, representing a 3.6 times increase in the total available in the state. The termination of part of the natural gas supply agreements from Bolivia, in 2019, brought challenges for the energy security of the Southern region, which consolidates the importance of the terminal designed by NFE.
The TGS will be located 300 meters from the coast. It includes infrastructure to receive, store, regasify and distribute the natural gas, which will arrive by sea through methane carriers and will be transferred by ship to ship system to an FSRU (floating storage and regasification unit), which has the capacity to store 160,000 cubic meters of LNG. After regasification, the natural gas continues for about 2 kilometers in a pipeline under the bed of the bay, until it flows into the same entry point of the OSPAR pipeline, in Itapoá, ensuring minimal occupation of the aquatic space and minimal interference in marine nature. On land, the natural gas will be transported through a 31-kilometer pipeline to the connection point with Gasbol, in the city of Garuva.
The construction work should generate between 500 and 800 formal job openings, adding direct and indirect jobs, with priority given to recruiting local labor. “The new pipeline will guarantee local supply and provide for the development of the region, supporting the advancement of industry in the state and expanding the supply of gas in the South, Southeast, and Center-West regions of the country. We are excited to execute this important project and looking forward to other opportunities to increase our portfolio, says Marcelo Hofke, Tenenge’s general officer.
The economy of Santa Catarina will benefit from the increased availability of LNG. Currently, Santa Catarina consumes 2.5 million cubic meters per day supplied by the Brazil-Bolivia gas pipeline (Gasbol), but has an agreement to supply only 2,1 million, bearing an additional fee to cover the excess demand.
About New Fortress Energy
NFE is an energy infrastructure company founded to help accelerate the global transition to clean energy. Its goal is to migrate from low-carbon, natural gas operations to carbon zero, green hydrogen, generated from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. In addition to the assets in Brazil, it has six LNG or power generation projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, two in the USA and one in Europe. The company was founded in 2014 and, in 2019, went public with an IPO on Nasdaq.
