Braskem and SCG Chemicals study joint investment in bioethylene production for I’m green biopolyethylene in Thailand

Braskem, the world’s largest producer of biopolymers, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SCG Chemicals, one of Thailand’s largest petrochemical companies and an industry leader in Asia, to conduct studies to jointly invest in a new bioethanol dehydration plant in Thailand to produce bioethylene and I’m greenTM biopolyethylene. If implemented, this cooperation can double the existing capacity of bio-PE I’m greenTM.

“Amidst the growing demand for sustainable solutions and circular economy around the world, we continue looking for opportunities to expand the availability of bio-PE I’m greenTM. In addition to meeting customer expectations and contributing to the commitment of carbon neutrality by 2050, this project may be a milestone for Braskem’s presence in Asia. We are pleased to develop this potential partnership with SCG Chemicals, who shares a similar vision with respect to sustainability and has a successful track record in the chemical industry in Asia, says Roger Marchioni, Braskem’s Director for Asia.

Tanawong Areeratchakul, President of SCG Chemicals adds: “We are committed to sustainability and the advancing of the circular economy for a better society and environment. This MOU means that we are exploring possible partnership and investment options with Braskem to bring biopolymer production to Asia. This would help us fulfill our promise to become “Chemical Companies for Sustainability” and to ensure social and environmental management according to ESG standards (Environmental, Social and Governance), while promoting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and meeting the growing market demand for environmentally friendly products, in compliance with the guidelines for the development of the Bio-Circular-Green Economy: Thailand’s BCG Model.”

If the feasibility studies are approved by mutual agreement between the parties, the production unit will be located in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand. This project would allow the combination of Braskem’s technology and biopolymer know-how with SCG Chemicals’ knowledge of the Asian market and expertise in PE production.
