Dr. Mayanse Mitri Boulos, 78, was a medical coordinator for all Odebrecht Group companies. As Guilherme Abreu, of Odebrecht S.A., pointed out in an internal statement that announced his death from an heart attack on Sunday afternoon, August 2, he was “a very present, dedicated and beloved professional. He was interested in everyone’s health”.

Dr. Mayanse has a very beautiful history in his 40 years of Odebrecht. Although he was a trained surgeon, he was a very special general practitioner, always seeking broader information about the living conditions and the health of each of his patients. His contacts with other doctors and main hospitals in São Paulo was a great asset for the Group.

He was born in Lebanon into a family of humble origin, Dr Mayanse came to Brazil at a very young age, and here he found his love for medicine. He didn’t stop working any day during the pandemic. He worked regularly for seven days a week, and maintained a regular diet.

Some people who worked with Dr Mayanse

    shared their stories with him.

Viviane Silva de Oliveira, health support

“I met Dr. Mayanse in 1995, when I started working with him in his office. I had never worked in the health sector before, and this year I turn 25 years old, always at his side. He was a person of big heart, very obstinate and never gave up of anything. Even in difficult cases, He was always very careful and patient. He used to say that the clinical examination is sovereign, as it was the time where he would get to know the patient and his needs. He was one of those doctors you can trust, because his life experience allowed him to give advice on anything. We had a very good synergy: I could understand what he needed while dealing with the patient. I learned from him to be tolerant, flexible and disciplined. He told me that the best way to teach someone is by example. He lived out his mission with mastery and pride in serving the patient.

He used to tell me things like: “Vivi, a person works in health has no rest”, “the patient is our leader”, “I will call you every day during your vacation”. I’m sure he’s accomplished his mission and, wherever he is, he’ll keep doing his job. After all, he used to say he couldn’t do anything else. He was very proud to say he was a doctor. He is going to be missed a lot. We shared the same birthday, and he always called me to wish a happy birthday. I will miss him. He will always live in our hearts.”

Denize Cavalcante Lopes, physician at Odebrecht

“Dr. Mayanse was an old fashioned doctor. Although he had a strong surgical training, he was also a handful general practitioner. He began working as a doctor at a time when there were not so many technologies and diagnosis exams,  so he learned early on the importance of examining his patient using the exquisite techniques of clinical propaedeutics. He was attentive to any sign of abnormality and, as a medical detective, he always sought the solution for each case. After so many years of academic training, He had a unique sagacity, in which the clinic was sovereign and he would add to that with mastery the use of all resources and advances of current medicine.

His patients (he used to call his like that) were of paramount importance in his daily routine, and they woke up very early to begin his cycle of visits and care. And he would transit with ease through all the main hospitals in São Paulo. He was known, heard and admired by medical professionals of the most diverse specialties. His contacts list was immense, but he would handpick them to take care of his patients when referred to them. He forwarded his patients, but never abandoned them, he remained attentive to every step of the treatment, until the cure. And, in his 46 years of dedication to this company, he took care of everyone who was entrusted to him, with competence, devotion, responsibility and love.

As a professional colleague I have a report. A few years ago, on December 28th, he invited me to make the “tour” of daily visits to hospitalized patients. We went to Hospital 9 de Julho, then to Hospital Sírio e Libanês and, at last, Hospital Albert Einstein. Before each visit he used to tell me briefly the story of that case. By using no textual resources, he would give impressive details of evolution. Every time he entered the patients’ rooms I was able to witness something that delighted me most: the look of trust and admiration of the patient and his relatives, for the simple fact that his doctor was there, paying attention to the storm and ready to calm down the rough sea of disease. We will miss him. He will leave a huge empty space, and nothing can fill that.”

Monica Mendonca Lavigne Rogerio de Souza, nurse

“I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Mayanse for 11 years. I am a nurse and currently I would support him by coordinating the nursing team in the occupational and welfare area, managing the outpatient clinic at Pinheiros One. Dr. Mayanse has been known for the best feature: unconditional love for medicine and his family. That love for his work guided his life. For me, He is an example of integrity, wisdom and simplicity. A great master, doctor, leader, and friend. He left us immeasurable lessons.”
